SLIDELL — After defeating Pope John Paul II 5-4 in the first two contests of a three-game series last week in District 10-2A competition, Pine suffered a 7-0 loss to the Jaguars on the road Saturday afternoon.

Pine hit the ball hard throughout the game, but Pope John Paul II’s defense was solid all game. The Jaguars did not commit an error and turned three double plays.

“We hit the ball hard a few times,” Pine coach Blake Dillon said. “I think they rolled three double plays on us from us hitting the ball hard right at them. Have to give it up to them. They played real good defense today and we didn’t.”

Pine’s defense committed four errors, but the Raiders allowed just one unearned run. The team also turned three double plays.

The Jaguars had a chance to score early on. Pope John Paul II’s Matt Castillo singled before Anthony Chappetta, who went 1-for-3, put down a sacrifice bunt, but a bobble allowed him to reach. Sean Price, who had no official at-bats with four walks and a run scored, drew a walk. The next hitter struck out. That was followed by a fly ball to centerfield, which was caught by Connor Holmes. Holmes came up throwing and delivered a strike to catcher Trey Cooper, who made the tag to end the inning.

Pope John Paul II got on the board in the second inning. Reese Satterlee, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, singled and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

The Jaguars added two more in the third. Price walked, and Taylor Thies, who was hit three times and drove in a run, was hit before Justin Loga reached on a fielder’s choice. After a walk to Tyler Blakeman, Sattlerlee hit a two-run double to centerfield, plating courtesy runner Kenny Lacoste and Loga.

PJP doubled its lead in the fourth inning. Price walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Thies and Loga were hit to load the bases. Blakeman made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly, sending Price home. Blakeman then hit a two-run single to center, scoring Lacoste and Loga.

The final run scored in the fifth. Corey Schellang singled and Castillo reached on an error. Chapetta hit a grounder to third. Pine got the force out at third, but a throwing error allowed the runners to move up. Castillo later scored when Thies was hit with the bases loaded for an RBI and a 7-0 lead.

Pine had a chance to get back in it during the sixth. The Raiders loaded the bases with nobody out. Caleb Voth singled, Dillon Morris walked and Jamie Adcox was hit. The next batter lined a pitch, but PJP shortstop Price made a nice catch then threw to second for a double play. A groundout ended the frame.

Pine held PJP scoreless in the sixth, but could only get one base runner in the seventh on Austin Temples’ double.

Winning pitcher Jacob Lain went the distance in the four-hit shutout with four strikeouts, two walks and a hit batter.

The loss put Pine at 14-3 overall and 2-1 in district play.

Holmes, Landon Fonda and Ethan Knight singled for the Raiders.

Pope John Paul II is 4-13 this season and 2-2 in league play.
