Pine captures close victory

For the second straight day, the Pine duo of Connor Holmes and Jamie Adcox teamed up for the winning run in the seventh inning, and for the second game in a row, the Raiders were victorious over Pope John Paul II, 5-4.

Thursday’s game was tied 4-4 as Pine came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. Adcox doubled to lead off, which brought Holmes to the plate. Holmes hit a hard grounder to second, but the ball took a bad hop and went into centerfield. Adcox came around to score the winning run on Holmes’ RBI single.

Holmes finished 2-for-3 in the contest.

Harrison Jones, Rion Terrell and Kaleb Voth recorded a hit each.

Terrell doubled, drove in two runs and scored once.

Tate Roach had an RBI and a run, while Kendall Sheridan and Kaden Fersch each scored a run.

Holmes, who pitched 1/3 of an inning in relief, was the winning pitcher.

PJP took a 2-0 lead through one inning. Pine trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the second. The Jaguars extended the margin to 3-1 in the third, but Pine came back and went in front for the first time after adding three runs in the bottom of the third inning.

The pitching took over for the next three innings, as the teams were held scoreless until the seventh.

PJP tied the game in the final inning with a run, but Pine scored the winning run in the bottom of the frame for its second-straight 5-4 victory over Pope John Paul II.

The Raiders overcame five errors, which led to three unearned runs, in the victory.

Pine moved to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in district.

The teams are scheduled to play today at PJP at noon.
