William Carey University’s Devin Smith once again shined on the mound for the Crusaders in a 9-0 victory over Eureka College at home Wednesday.

The 2015 Mt. Hermon graduate threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 68 pitches.

The teams played a scoreless first inning, but William Carey tallied three times in second to go in front 3-0.

That was plenty for Smith.

The Crusaders upped the lead to 8-0 with a five-run fourth inning and they tacked on one more in the fifth.

The Crusaders defense was solid, committing just one error.

Smith has been tough on opposing hitters this season. The freshman is 3-0 with a 1.64 earned run average and he has two complete games of the four he’s started.

Smith has thrown 22 innings and has 12 strikeouts and nine walks. Opponents are hitting just .181 against him.

Smith pitched the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday. William Carey also won the second contest in lopsided fashion, 16-3.

The Crusaders were 18-8 this season entering Friday’s game against Blue Mountain College.
