Mt. Hermon suffered a 70-35 loss to Midland on the road Friday night in the opening round of the Class B state playoffs.

Device Taylor led the Yellow Jackets with nine points. George Smith recorded seven while Joseph Magee finished with six. Ike Tate had five, Trey Roberts and Jordan Smith posted three each and D.J. Elzey added two.

No. 28 Mt. Hermon had a young team this year. The Yellow Jackets’ roster featured just one senior in Magee.

“Joseph came back and he’s played really strong for us inside defensively,” Mt. Hermon coach B. Alford said. “He’s a good kid and we wish him the best. He’s been on the team for four years and has really improved.”

Alford said this was a transition year and added that his team got better.

“Last year, the two kids we lost accounted for about 80 percent of our scoring,” Alford said. “Our kids improved this year. An area of improvement is ball control. We have to work on ball control and we have to play defense hard each time down the floor.”

Mt. Hermon finished with an 8-12 record.

No. 5 Midland advanced to the regional round and played No. 12 Glenmora on Tuesday.
