Bowling Green’s season ends with loss to Jackson Academy

Bowling Green School’s season came to a conclusion Wednesday in the Overall Tournament, as the Lady Buccaneers lost to Jackson Academy, 58-30, in the second round of the overall tournament at Mississippi College.
The Lady Buccaneers, who are the Class AAA No. 2 seed, trailed, 9-7, after the first quarter, but Jackson Academy outscored Bowling Green, 16-4, in the second period.
Jackson Academy, the top-seeded team out of Class AAAA, took a 26-11 lead to halftime.
Nobody was able to reach double figures for the Lady Buccaneers.
Ashley Foret led the team in scoring with eight points. She also grabbed four rebounds.
Shelby McDonald and Hallie Robertson both had five points. McDonald hit both of her field-goal attempts, which included a 3-pointer. She finished with one rebound. Robertson hit a three and made both of her free throws to go with a rebound.
Hollie Waskom and Sydney Watson tallied three points each. Watson totaled four rebounds while Waskom had one.
McKinley Seal and Peyton Stogner recorded two points each. Seal dished out three assists and pulled down a pair of rebounds. Stogner made both of her free throws, grabbed two rebounds and had an assist.
Mason Edwards and Caliee Fruge scored a point each. Edwards also had a rebound.
Bowling Green struggled from the field, hitting just 29 percent its shots (9-for-31), but they did well from the free-throw line at 75 percent (8-for-12).
Bowling Green finishes the year with a 35-7 record. The Lady Buccaneers won the District 5AAA and South State Tournaments. The team reached the finals of the Class AAA Tournament last week, but lost to Leake Academy.
Leake ended up losing Wednesday to Jackson Prep, the Class AAAA No. 2 seed, 53-47.
Jackson Academy plays the Class AAAA third-seeded team East Rankin Academy.
In Tuesday’s action, Bowling Green was victorious over Class AA’s No. 3 seed Claiborne Academy, 55-29, to advance to Wednesday’s game against Jackson Academy.
The Lady Buccaneers got off to a good start. They led 15-9 after the first quarter and were doubling up Claiborne, 30-15, at halftime.
Bowling Green’s defense was solid, holding Claiborne to 23.6 percent shooting (13-for-55). The defense also only allowed two free-throw attempts by Claiborne.
Offensively, the Lady Buccaneers struggled from the floor, hitting just 33.3, but the free-throw shooting was good. They knocked down 78.5 percent (11-of-14) from the line in the victory.
Foret filled up the stat sheet and recorded a double-double. Foret scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. She also dished out five assists. Foret converted eight of her nine free-throw attempts.
Fruge was successful on 5-of-8 from the floor, as she tallied 10 points and pulled down four boards.
McDonald posted eight points and four rebounds. She was 2-fo-4 from beyond the arc.
McKinley Seal recorded seven points, four rebounds and three assists.
Waskom finished with five points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Jadyn Jenkins and Robertson had three each. Jenkins grabbed a rebound while Robertson posted two assists, a board and hit three of her four free throws.
Mason Edwards added two points and a rebound in the win.
