Varnado’s girls go 1-2 at Hannan tourney

Varnado hung tough throughout its game against St. Katherine Preparatory School, but St. Katherine made a fourth-quarter run and defeated VHS, 57-44, in the 2015 Archbishop Hannan Hustle Basketball Tournament at Hannan.

Varnado trailed 27-26 at halftime. The teams exchanged field goals to begin the second half and then St. Katherine scored six unanswered points. Ashaunti Allen tallied the first four points before Dajalone Freeman scored the final field goal of the run and Varnado trailed, 34-27 with 4:59 left in the third period.

Varnado countered the run with eight in a row to take the lead.

Tarralyn Moses, who scored 28 points, drove in for two before hitting two free throws to make it 34-31 with 3:31 on the clock.

Ke’arria Green, who posted four points, banked in a shot, trimming it to one. Jaden Foster, who had eight points, gave her team the lead when she grabbed an offensive rebound and hit the follow-up shot. Varnado moved in front, 35-34.

But St. Katherine went on an 8-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter to take a 42-35 advantage after its first possession of the final period.

La’Rian Francois tied the game when she split from the line. Dajalone Freeman also hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, putting St. Katherine back in front. Genise Wells made it 38-35 with a drive to the bucket and Francois pulled down an offensive rebound and made the putback at the buzzer. It was 40-35 after three quarters.

Wells began the fourth quarter with an offensive rebound and putback to make it 42-35.

Varnado rebounded once again. Moses converted a 3-point play and then hit for two, helping her team cut the deficit down to two with the 5-0 run at the 6:27 mark.

But in this game of runs, St. Katherine put itself in a good position to win by posting 10 points straight.

Francois and Wells were good for two. Kedreion Royal grabbed an offensive board and was successful on the putback. Allen hit a jumper and Francois was good on a fastbreak layup. It was 52-40 with 3:14 left.

Moses ended the run with a pair of free throws, but VHS was unable to get any closer in the 57-44 loss.

Yienna Kemp scored four points for VHS.

Allen led St. Katherine with 16 points while Francois posted 12.

Royal tallied seven points while Chardae Dixon and Wells both posted six points. Freeman finished with five and Jordin Ratliff added two.

Varnado lost its second game Tuesday by just one at 52-51 to Fontainebleau despite playing without starter Yienna Kemp.

Also, Green, who had two points, five assists and a rebound, was injured during the fourth quarter and returned toward the end of the game.

Both were back for Wednesday’s contest.

In the game against Fontainebleau, Moses scored 35 points and recorded three rebounds and two steals.

Foster posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards.

Quierra Bickham finished with three points, five boards and a steal while Destiny Keys had two points, a rebound and a steal.

Varnado rebounded from the setback with a 65-32 victory over Lakeshore, as Moses had another monster game with 38 points.

Moses also dished out four assists, made two steals and pulled down a rebound.

Kemp had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to go with six assists and three steals.
Foster nearly had a double. She posted eight points, eight boards, an assist and a steal.

Green logged four points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist.
