Abrams all-district defensive MVP

Varnado’s Delrick Abrams was named the District 8-1A defensive Most Valuable Player and five other Wildcats received first-team all-district honors.
This season, Abrams, who was a first-team player at defensive back and athlete and a second-team receiver, put up solid numbers. The senior had 66 tackles and four sacks. He also did a good job forcing turnovers. He intercepted nine passes and forced two fumbles. Abrams scored 22 combined touchdowns between offense, defense and special teams. Abrams is competing in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association/Louisiana Football Coaches Association All-Star Game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Abrams said it feels good being the defensive MVP. He said he worked hard this summer and he also said that he was surprised when he found out.
“There is a lot of talent out there,” Abrams said. “I felt good to get that. It was just a blessing.”
The Wildcats were well represented on the first team. Besides Abrams five other Wildcats were named to the top squad.
On offense, lineman Kyle Slocum was the only offensive player to make the first team.
Defensively, the rest of the first-teamers for the Wildcats are linebacker Damon Kirsch, linemen Jaylon Jefferson and Andre Jones and defensive back Errol Varnado.
A host of Wildcats were selected for the second team.
Besides Abrams, on offense were quarterback D.J. Jefferson, running backs Nick Darden and Desmond Harry and linemen Xavier Moses and JaDarrell Magee. Moses also made the second team for defensive line.
The rest of the defensive second-teamers include, linebacker Darien Vargas, defensive back Tyrandis Crosby and lineman Dearrious Parker.
Varnado’s honorable mention players are Jamarion Davis, Kevin Boudreaux, Travon Stokes, JoNathan Green, Jermaine Sanders and Nick Blackburn.
This season, Varnado posted a 7-5 record. The Wildcats reached the regional round of the Class 1A playoffs before losing to Haynesville, 61-20.
Covenant Christian Academy quarterback Marquel Daigle is the league’s offensive MVP and his coach Randy Boquet is the district’s Coach of the Year.
This season, Covenant Christian reached the Division IV playoffs, but lost to Vermilion Catholic, 40-8, in the opening round. Vermilion Catholic made it to the semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Southern Lab.
The first-team running backs are Covenant Christian teammates Devin Allen and Cameron Solet along with Ridgewood’s Brian Rossa. Allen is also a first-team linebacker and Solet is a first-team defensive back and return specialist.
Houma Christian’s Devin Battaglia and St. Martin Episcopal’s John Hurley are the receivers with Covenant Christian’s Caleb Seitz at tight end. Battaglia is a first-team defensive back and flex.
The rest of the first-team offensive linemen are Covenant Christian’s Jordan Friloux, Houma Christian’s Luke Chamberlain and St. Martin’s teammates Gershom Thompson and Hayden Nugent. Thompson also made second team at defensive line.
At defense, the rest of the first-teamers are Houma Christian linebacker Zacharia Trujillo, linemen Houma Christian’s Jacque LeMaire and Covenant Christian’s Sashen Staidum and Hunter Landry and defensive back Covenant Christian’s Devante Johnson.
Houma Christian’s Sam Trosclair is a first-team place kicker and St. Martin’s Luke Didriksen is a first-team punter.
