Varnado’s Wildcats capped off play in the 2015 Mandeville Summer Basketball League Tuesday at Pelican Park in Mandeville.
The Wildcats were victorious over Mandeville, 59-44.
D.J. Jefferson led Varnado with 15 points. He was one of three Wildcats to score in double figures.
Nick Darden finished with 15 points while Damon Kirsch put up 12.
The next game was a 62-48 setback to Lakeshore,
Jefferson and Kirsch both tallied in double figures.
Jefferson posted 14 while Kirsch recorded 13.
Varnado finished the summer basketball league with a 7-8 record, as the Wildcats look to improve on last season.
The Wildcats went 10-15 in the 2014-15 season. Varnado reached the playoffs as the No. 25 seed, but lost to eighth seeded Southern Lab, 74-46, in the bi-district round of the Class 1A postseason.
Varnado coach Brad Oestriecher was happy with the way the summer went for his club.
“It’s been a great summer for us,” Oestriecher said. “We have improved tremendously and look forward to next winter.”
In the summer league, teams played two 20-minute halves. The clock ran continuously until the 1-minute mark of each half. At that point, it stopped on each whistle. Shooting fouls were awarded one free throw, which was worth the same as the shot that was attempted was.
