Bowling Green School has named Barry Seal its boys varsity basketball coach.

Seal gave his thoughts on taking the reigns as the varsity coach.

“It’s a group of guys that I’ve coached since they were in the eighth grade,” Seal said. “I thought long and hard about the situation of these guys, who will be seniors, and the underclassmen on the team. I wanted to give them some closure of who would be coaching them, so they move forward and worry about playing the game of basketball.”

Seal has spent the last four years as an assistant for the boys and girls basketball teams at Bowling Green. Seal will continue his role as an assistant for the girls’ team under new girls’ head coach Charlie Domino.

Seal said it should be a very smooth transition into his new role with the boys team.

“I’ve been connected with this team,” Seal said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, but these guys are hard workers, so they’ll put the time and effort in.”

Seal has been coaching basketball since the 1994-95 season. He’s been the head coach for three state title teams and a state runner-up club.

Seal coached Bowling Green’s boys to back-to-back state titles in 1996-97 and 1997-98.

The Buccaneers were also runner up in the overall tournament during the 1997-98 campaign.

Seal guided the Silliman Institute girls team to a state championship and overall title in the 1999-2000 year and finished second in the state the following season.

Bowling Green Principal Beverly Young said one of the advantages of having Seal as the head coach is the consistency.

“The kids know him,” Young said. “They are aware of his techniques and strategies. His focus is to win games and to build a positive role model for the kids.”
