Franklinton’s 4×200 relay team was the third best squad at the Class 4A state meet, which took place at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.

The group ran the event in 1:28.71 for the third-place finish. McDonogh No. 35 was victorious in 1:27.73 while Bastrop ran a 1:28.47 for second place.

The group featured Azende T. Magee, Markus Conerly, Bryan Baham and Martavius James.

Baham is the only senior on the 4×200 team. Magee and James are juniors, and Conerly is a sophomore.

The time those four ran is the best time they’ve ever run together.

“When I walked the relay team to the gate, the last thing I told them was to enjoy the experience,” Franklinton coach Blake Wilson said. “All of the little things were in place and all I wanted them to worry about was having fun.”

Individually, Peter Williams and Deante Cotton finished fifth for the Demons.

Williams was fifth best in Class 4A in the javelin with a throw of 160-8. The distance was the junior’s personal best.

Teurlings Catholic’s Asa Miller was victorious with a throw of 177-10, beating out St. Thomas More’s Matthew Gardner, who was at 176-3.

Cotton, a junior, was fifth in the discus after a distance of 126-0. Westgate’s Taylor Fondal threw a 157-8 to win in lopsided fashion. Benton’s Jordan White was runner up at 135-0.

Junior Tavion Partman finished eighth in the triple jump at 41-4.25.

Northside’s Christian Miller topped the event at 50-9.

Senior P.J. Burkhalter posted a ninth-place finish in the shot put after posting a 44.11.5. Fondal won the shot put at 52-0.5.

Wilson said they started the season off with the goal of being District 8-4A champs, which they accomplished.

“We knew if we could accomplish that, it would get us closer to state,” Wilson said.

Wilson praised his athletes on the season they had.

“The kids bought in, worked hard and did great this year,” Wilson said.
