Varnado’s girls’ basketball team hung tough in its Class 1A bi-district playoff game Thursday against Arcadia, but a rough third quarter was the key in a 76-46 loss on the road.

The contest was tied, 30-30, at halftime, but fourth-seeded Arcadia outscored No. 29 Varnado, 28-3, in the third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game.

“Being outsized will hurt you every time,” Varnado coach Lubertha Peters said. “We hung in for the first half, but we kind of ran out of gas. We played good control ball for the first half, but their pressure got to us in the third quarter.”

Peters said she was proud of her club, and that they did well.

Tarralyn Moses led Varnado with 21 points.

Yienna Kemp also had a good game, posting 19 points.

Breanna Holmes added four points while teammate Kenisha Kemp chipped in with two.

Varnado had just one senior in Kemp.

VHS finished the 2014-15 season with a 10-15 record.

Aracadia advances to the regional round and takes to the road to play 20th-seeded Lafayette Christian, which defeated No. 13 Houma Christian, 52-47.

The winner plays either fifth-seeded Merryville or No. 12 Gueydan.
