Despite the best efforts of Varnado, Madison Prep defeated the Wildcats, 46-20, in the final regular season game Friday.

Madison Prep quarterback Edwin Kleinpeter led the Chargers in a seven-play push down field for the first touchdown of the District 6-1A contest. Troy James scored from the 5. Madison Prep tried for the 2-point conversion with a pass to Jaylen Brown but failed.

Varnado’s D.J. Jefferson returned the kickoff to his team’s 33. On the first play, Jefferson threw a long pass down field to Delrick Abrams who caught in at the 32 and ran it in for the touchdown. The Wildcats attempted the 2-point conversion with a pass from Abrams to Jefferson, but the Wildcats were unable to get through the Chargers’ line. It was 6-6 with 8:18 left in the first. The Chargers (6-4, 2-2) pushed hard for five plays moving the ball from their own 25 to the Varnado’s 34, but Kleinpeter had a pass intercepted by Travon Stokes and returned to VHS’ 46.

The Wildcats (4-5, 1-4) took advantage. From the Chargers’ 30, Jefferson threw to Abrams at the 25 and he ran the ball for the touchdown. Nicholas Blackburn kicked successfully for the extra point, and Varnado led, 13-6.

The second quarter opened up with Madison Prep in possession. The Varnado defense was able to halt the Chargers.

Jefferson fumbled on the second play from scrimmage, following the punt, and Brian Savoie recovered for the Chargers at Varnado’s 12. Kleinpeter tossed the ball to Savoie for the touchdown. Malcolm Roach’s quarterback keeper up the center for the 2-point conversion put the Chargers ahead, 14-13. The Wildcats try to mount a reply but the Chargers defense held through the remains of the half.

The third Quarter opened up with Abrams returning the kickoff to the 50. A hardline Madison Prep defense halted the Wildcats attempt to move down field.

The Chargers took advantage with Kleinpeter making a series of quick handoffs to Quincy Banks to move into scoring range and then another handoff to Roach for the touchdown. Roach again went for the 2-point conversion, keeping the ball and running it up the middle to bring the score to 22-13.

VHS turned the ball over on downs at Madison Prep’s 46. Kleinpeter handed off to Everett Richard, who ran down the left side for the 54-yard touchdown. Roach was once again good for 2 and score was 30-13. Both touchdowns went answered until the Wildcats defense halted a five-play drive with a minute left in the third quarter. Braylen Bolden punted from his 16 and was received by Nick Darden. He caught the punt at the 43 and ran it back for the touchdown. Blackburn kicked for the extra point and the score moved to 30-20.

The fourth quarter found the Chargers’ defense solidifying against the Wildcats attempts to push downfield. At the same time, the Chargers were able to put two more touchdowns on the board bringing the final score to 46-20.

Varnado’s next game will be in the playoffs.
