Varnado’s D.J. Jefferson threw for 156 yards and five touchdowns, while running for 97 yards and a score in a 40-29 victory over Pearl River at home Friday.

“Offensively, we played very well,” Wildcats coach Scott Shaffett said.

“D.J. stepped up and threw the ball very well. He was comfortable at the quarterback position. He took his time and made the right passes. We moved the ball well, and the main thing we did was score.”

Three of Jefferson’s touchdowns went to Nick Darden,

Darden caught scoring passes of, 21, 25, and 26 yards.

Armontee Kemp tallied a 24-yard touchdown reception.

J.J. Williams posted a 10-yard touchdown catch.

Also for the Wildcats, Wilbert Gray carried the ball eight times for 39 yards.

Shaffett said it was a great overall performance for his team, which led 26-7 at halftime.

“Defensively, we played great in the first half,” Shaffett said. “I thought we got tired in the second half, but we hung in.”

The win snaps a three-game losing streak by the Wildcats, who are 2-3, this season.

Friday’s game was the final home game for Varnado until Halloween Night.

The Wildcats are on the road for the next three contests. Varnado opens District 7-1A play Friday, traveling to Kentwood. The next two are against Christian Life and Haynes Academy.
