Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival 5K

The Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival 5K race takes place 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at Cassidy Park.

The run/walk event, which is sponsored by H.L. Brownstone’s Motivated to Move Run/Walk Club, costs $25 to enter. Registration on raceday occurs from 7-7:45 a.m. The event is open to all ages.

They are also awarding medals to the many different age groups. Custom medals will be awarded to the top three finishers from each age group.

Washington Parish Fair Race

The 15th annual Washington Parish Fair 5K walk/run occurs Oct. 18 at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds.

The event begins at 8 a.m. with raceday registration and number pickup starting at 7 a.m.

Pre-registration costs $15 and includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration must be postmarked by Oct. 6.

Raceday signups are $20 and includes a T-shirt while supplies last.

Awards will be given to the top overall male and female, the Master male and female (40-older), and first-and-second place for many different age groups.

Awards are also being given out for top overall male and female walkers.

Turkey Shoot

The Knights of Columbus Council 1819 is sponsoring the sixth annual Turkey Shoot Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Home in Bogalusa.

Competitors will have a chance to shoot at a target and the closest to the bullseye wins a turkey.

The event features prizes, food and games. They are holding a raffle, costing $5 with first place getting $750 and second $250.

USM Fall Camps

The Southern Mississippi University baseball program is holding camps over the next few months, including a Hitting Under the Lights camp and a Fall Showcase camp at Pete Taylor Park.

The Hitting Under the Lights camp will consist of specific hitting mechanics, approach, contact points and other instruction related to the Southern Miss hitting philosophy.

This camp is designed for high school hitters (grades 7-12) to learn from current Golden Eagle coaches and players about the proper steps to being a successful hitter.

The four-week camp will take place on Monday nights (Sept. 29, Oct. 6, Oct. 13, Oct. 20).

The clinic will include insurance and a USM baseball T-shirt.

The cost of the camp is $135. However, if the applicant participated in the 2014 Fall Instructional Camp, which already occurred, the cost is $115.

Deadline for applications is Sept. 26. The first 30 applicants to have a completed registration will be assured a spot.

The Fall Showcase camp, scheduled for Nov. 22, is designed to allow current high school freshmen through junior college sophomores (junior college freshmen must be an academic qualifier) baseball players the chance to showcase their abilities and receive instruction from current Southern Miss. coaches, various junior college coaches, and coaches from other four-year institutions. The camp is set to take place at Pete Taylor Park, with registration beginning at 11 a.m.

The camp begins at noon and ends when all camp participants have completed the workout. The price per camper is $155.

This cost includes instruction, insurane and a camp T-shirt.

The itinerary will include instruction specific to each participant’s defensive position, improving 60 times, and hitting at Pete Taylor Park. Any pitcher will be allowed to participate at both positions.
