Bowling Green returns to action tonight looking for its first win, as the Buccaneers battle Wilkinson County Christian Academy in a battle of 0-2 teams that have first-year head coaches.

The Bucs are off to a rough start. Bowling Green has scored just seven points in the first two games and has been outscored 85-7. Last week, the Bucs were shutout by Oak Forest Academy 49-0. Bowling Green beat WCCA last season 28-20. One of the things coach David Currier said his team needs to do is eliminate turnovers. They had four last week.

Bowling Green has made some changes this week. Brandon McElveen goes from linebacker to defensive line. Connor McCain, who plays different positions, will see time at running back.

The Bucs were limited to 72 yards of total offense last week with 23 coming on the ground.

Brady Goings threw for 49 yards and an interception.

Grant Alexander ran for 21 yards on eight carries.

Cody Wilhite recovered a muffed punt.

Wilkinson is in a similar position as Bowling Green. The squad is 0-2 and is coming off of a 43-12 loss to Tri-County Academy.

Wilkinson has been outscored 43-12.

“The first two games, we didn’t get the best draw,” Kyle White said. “We played a very good Adams County and then Tri County last week. Both are very well coached and very good teams. We have made some very good improvements from game one to game two. Hopefully we’ll make good improvements from game two to game three.”

The offense is an I-formation and single back.

The quarterback is Justin Prevost with Mason Contine and Kaleb Poole the running backs. Rodney Boyd, who gets most of the carries, is the fullback with Colton Nettles and Austin Hendry at wide receiver.

White said they do well when they block their assignments.

“Whenever you have a veer offense, it comes down to blocking,” White said.

“We ended up with about 250 yards rushing last week. We’re starting to get it now.”

Defensively, the team uses a 40 front, but will also use a 50 front.

The top defenders are end Hayden Patterson and strongside linebacker Boyd.

Bowling Green is back on the road next Friday against Brookhaven.
