LSU running back Terrence Magee has been chosen to wear No. 18 for the Tigers this season.
According to the Tigers’ media guide, the number has been synonymous with success on-and-off the field, as well as a selfless attitude that has become the epitome of being an LSU football player.
The tradition started in 2003 when quarterback Matt Mauck helped LSU win its first National Championship since the 1958 season.
After Mauck’s last season with LSU, he handed it down to running back Jacob Hester and he helped the Tigers win another title in 2007.
A Tiger is voted to wear the number each season and this year, it went to Magee.
“It’s a tremendous honor,” the 2011 Franklinton High School graduate said. “I’ve watched three guys wear that number Brandon Taylor (2011), Bennie Logan (2012) and Lemin Barrow (2013). I’ve always watched the way they conducted themselves and they truly showed me what it meant to wear the number 18.”
Magee said he was presented with the number at a team meeting.
Magee said he knew he had a chance, but wasn’t sure if he would get it.
“I was surprised because a lot of guys were worthy,” Magee said.
Franklinton coach Shane Smith said they are very proud of Magee.
“I think it’s a reflection of his family, our community and our school,” Smith said. “It’s also about the respect from his coaches and teammates.”
Last season, Magee ran 86 times for 626 yards and eight touchdowns.
Magee is the second Franklinton High School graduate to receive the honor during the short tradition of the number.
Taylor, a 2008 Franklinton graduate, was the first former Demons’ player to receive that honor.
LSU opens the 2014 campaign Aug. 30 against Wisconsin. The game is being played in Houston, Texas.
The opening home game is Sept. 6 against Sam Houston State.
