Franklinton’s chance to go unbeaten through the Northshore Summer Baseball League came to an end Thursday with a 6-4 loss to Madisonville Jewelers (Covington High based) on the road Thursday.

Franklinton (6-1-1) led 4-1 through five, but Madisonville Jewelers (7-1) scored five runs in the sixth on five hits and the Demons committed three errors.

“We talk about crooked numbers a lot. We like to get them, we don’t like to give them up,” FHS coach Jeff Tageant said. “Five runs in that one inning where we got a little bit away from baseball fundamentals with a lead, keeping base hits at first base, we had a routine double play ball that could’ve got us out of the inning. But we had some young guys out there, inexperienced guys and the whole point of summer is for them to learn, so hopefully they learn from their mistakes and come spring time, those things won’t happen.”

Franklinton’s Trevor Jenkins walked with one out in the seventh, but the next guy struck out, and that was followed by a lineout to end the contest.

Jenkins had a good day on the mound and got a no decision.

He threw five-plus innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Both of the base on balls occurred in the fourth. At the plate, Jenkins didn’t record a hit, but did draw two.

Austin Bradford pitched in relief, but struggled for one of the rare times and was tagged with the loss.

“Trevor’s pitched well the last few games,” Tageant said. “He pitched good enough to win. We always feel good to bring Austin in. He had a little rough outing. I think that’s first one in a long time. He’s just got to move on to the next one and that’s just part of the game. There’s tomorrow.”

The Demons were limited to just two hits Thursday.

Chris Bodet started and pitched the first four innings for Madisonville Jewelers.

Matt Jones threw in relief and got the win, after pitching the final three frames of no-run, no-hit ball with two strikeouts and two walks.

The two hits came from Morgan Angelo and C.J. Estave, but they were big ones.

Angelo led off the second inning with a single. After his hit, Angelo got a pair of great jumps.

He stole second base standing up and then third sliding.

He ended up scoring on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

The Demons added three more in the third. Trevor Davis was hit to begin. Cameron Dominguez sacrificed bunted him to second. Jenkins walked and Mack McElveen loaded the bases by getting hit. Estave was next and he hit a two-run double, plating Davis and Jenkins.

McElveen went to third and that was important because Angelo, who was next, grounded out to second to score McElveen and make it 4-0.

Madisonville Jewelers got on the board in the fourth to trim the lead to 4-1 and then added five to take the lead, which they never relinquished in the 6-4 win.

Franklinton is playing junior varsity Monday, with that game at Mandeville at 4 p.m.

The varsity team is back in action Wednesday, hosting Northlake Christian School. The JV contest begins at 4 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6:30.

The Northshore summer league playoffs start Thursday.
