James Arthur “Jimmy” Wood, 88, a resident of Franklinton, died at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 2, 1925, he was a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years. He was a founding member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he was a deacon emeritus, and he was a volunteer fire department member. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Italy and the south of France in WWII, where he was wounded three times and received Purple Hearts.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Emogene Dixon Wood of Franklinton; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Nan Wood of Franklinton; four grandchildren, Tammy Gendusa of Covington, Jeffery S. Wood of Baton Rouge, Kayce Wood Cummings of Bogalusa and James Lee Wood of Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Jeffery T. Jenkins, Nicholas A. Gendusa and Meric W. Cummings.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Wood; his parents, Wiley and Lucille Stringfield Wood; a sister, Ella Rose Wood Miller; and a brother, William A. Wood.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Crain Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Dr. Gene Richards and the Rev. Andrew Voss officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellis Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Hillcrest Baptist Church.
