Franklinton’s volleyball program is making history Tuesday afternoon.

For the first time ever, the Lady Demons are playing a volleyball match at home. They host Slidell.

“I’m just glad to be a part of it,” FHS coach Leslie McGhee said. “I have some seniors on the team who want to be part of the first volleyball team at Franklinton High.”

The junior varsity game gets under way at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity following.

The team is 1-1. FHS lost its opener to Pearl River on Sept. 4 before defeating Varnado Sept. 6.

FHS is not competing for district honors or a playoff berth this season. The key for the Lady Demons this year is to improve and learn the game.

For our first year we’ve done well,” McGhee said. “Learning the game has been the toughest part. I think most of the kids came in thinking it’s like recreational volleyball, but it’s a six-man rotation. You’re not standing and playing in the same place. You are having to move every time the serve changes.

“The rally scoring is something different for them because now you’re getting points on every serve. We’re getting better each time we practice and play.”

McGhee said she has three players, Stacey Hathcox, Kaitlyn Boughton and Carley Shipley, who have some volleyball experience.

The varsity match is a best of five games to 25, while the JV plays the best of three to 25 points.

Admission is $5.
