VHS’ Abrams wins district long jump title

Varnado’s Deldrick Abram captured the long jump in Wednesday’s District 7-1A Meet at Jewel Sumner.

Abram finished with a distance of 20-8.5. He was also second in the triple jump (39-4), with Southern Lab’s Marquise Ricard (46-10.5) winning.

Wednesday’s meet was a qualifier, as the top four finishers from each event advance to regionals Wednesday at Thibodaux High.

Southern Lab won the meet with 150 points with six teams competing. Christian Life (125) was second, followed by Kentwood (119), Archbishop Hannan (92), Varnado (30) and Mt. Hermon (17).

Varnado’s Devontae Newkirk was third in the long jump (20-2).

Ricard won the high jump (6-0) with Archbishop Hannan’s Derrick Tomberlin topping the pole vault (10-0).

Kentwood’s Torandon Watson captured the shot put (44-4), while Mt. Hermon’s Joel Brumfield (38-3.5) was fourth.

Kentwood’s Jay Nichols bested the discus (123-8).

Hannan’s Jack Witte topped the javelin (155-8). Mt. Hermon’s Alex Winters (138-1) and Varnado’s Bryan Miller (123-7) occupied the second and fourth spots, respectively.

Southern Lab won the 4×200-meter relay race (1:30).

Christian Life’s Westin Williams placed first in the 800 (2:15) and 1,600 (5:07) and 3,200 (11:47).

Southern Lab’s Maalik Marshall was best in the 110 hurdles (15.04) and 300 hurdles (40.56).

Christian Life’s Joseph Moses won the 100 (11.19).

Southern Lab won the 4×100 (44.0), while teammate Xavier Bell topped the 400 (52.48).

Christian Life’s Joseph Moses won the 200 (22.44), and Southern Lab topped the 4×400 relay (3:33).
