Several Mt. Hermon, Varnado girls advance to regional track meet

Mt. Hermon and Varnado girls’ track and field competitors attempted to qualify for the regionals in the District 7-1A meet Wednesday at Jewel Sumner.

The top four finishers from each event qualified for next Wednesday’s regional meet at Thibodaux High.

Kentwood won the meet with 161 points with six-teams competing. Archbishop Hannan (101) was second, followed by Christian Life (96), Southern Lab (77), Varnado (34) and Mt. Hermon (25).

Varnado’s Bianca Holmes qualified in two events. She was second in the 100-meter hurdles (20.84) behind Kentwood’s Darnelia Muse (15.82). Kentwood’s Muse also won the 300 hurdles (47.54).

Holmes finished third in the shot put (25-2.5), with Kentwood’s De’Kevia Nichols (28-8) winning.

Mt. Hermon (1:57) and Varnado (1:59) ran third-and-fourth in the 4×200 relay.

Mt. Hermon’s squad consisted of Kiara Williams, Jada Norman, Shalonda Jefferson and Kashman Coleman.

Varnado had Dayshjauna Nathaniel, Kenisha Kemp, Mahogany Simmons and Ke’arria Green.

Southern Lab (1:51) won the event.

Christian Life’s Katelyn McMorris won the long jump (16-7), while Kentwood’s Nykedria Pool took the triple jump (34-9).

Hannan’s Hannah Naquin topped the high jump (4-8), while Kentwood’s Nichols topped the discus (76-7). Varnado’s Yienna Kemp (63-3) and Mt. Hermon’s Nicole Riley (56-5) were third and fourth in the discus, respectively.

Kentwood’s Myiesha Gordon topped the javelin (86-4), with Mt. Hermon’s Kashman Coleman (85-8) the runner-up.

Hannan’s Elisabeth Hess topped the 1,600 (6:08) and 3,200 (13:36), while Kentwood’s Raquel Davis was best in the 100 (12.63).

Christian Life’s Breanna Elliott topped the 800 (2:30).

Kentwood won the 4×100 (51.16), while Kentwood’s Nykedria Pool bested the 400 (1:04).

Teammate Raquel Davis topped the 200 (26.33).

Christian Life won the 4×400 (4:38).
