VHS places top 6 in several events at Spartan Relays

Varnado’s Lady Wildcats had several athletes come in the top six and the team finished fourth in the Spartan Relays Friday at Salmen.

Covington won the meet by a wide margin with 188 points. The host school (68) was second, followed by First Baptist Christian School (35), Varnado (22) and Pope John Paul II (17).

First Baptist’s Gabrielle Jennings was the overall MVP with Covington’s Shakira Price the field MVP and Salmen’s Te’shara Gibson the track MVP.

Jennings won the 1,600 meters (5:15) and 3,200 (11:22).

Price won the high jump (4-10) and triple jump (31-1). Varnado’s Kenisha Kemp was third in the triple jump.

Gibson topped the 100 (12.50) and 400 (1:03). Varnado’s Ke’arria Green was fifth in the 100 (13.20).

Covington’s Brooke Jones won the shotput (37-9.5), as Varnado’s Bianca Holmes (24-7) placed sixth.

Covington’s Destini Lewis bested the discus (84-0), with Varnado’s Yienna Kemp (56-9) sixth.

Covington’s Cedricka Little topped the long jump (15-11). Varnado’s Benyetta Manning (14-10) and Dayshjauna Nathaniel (12-6) were fourth and sixth, respectively.

Covington’s Mariah Newman won the javelin (91-6).

Covington swept the relays, winning the 4×100 (50.84), 4×200 (1:46) and 4×400 (4:45).

Varnado was third in the 4×100 (0:56) and 4×200 (1:48).

Covington’s Zhaniece Parker took the 100 hurdles, with Varnado’s Holmes finishing fourth.

First Baptist’s Madelyn Jennings won the 800 (2:52), while Covington’s Morgan Jarrell was victorious in the 300-hurdles (52.10).

Varnado’s Manning was third in the 300 hurdles (1:02).

Salmen’s Macy Degruy topped the 200 (26.4) with Varnado’s Green (28.90) placing sixth.
