Varnado’s Abram wins long jump at relays

Varnado’s Delrick Abram captured the long jump and several teammates finished in the top six of various events at the Spartans Relays held Friday at Salmen.

Abram won the long jump with a distance of 20-10.5. He beat out teammate Devontae Newkirk, who was at 20-9.

Abram was also fourth in the triple jump (39-1.5), with Covington’s George Brister (41-7) winning it.

Covington won the five-team meet with 156 points. The host school was second at 145, followed by Varnado (32), Pope John Paul II (30) and First Baptist Christian School (5).

Salmen’s James Bennet and Vernel Turner were the overall and track MVP, respectively, with Covington’s Hawkem Eubanks the field MVP.

Bennet was a triple-event winner, topping the 800 meters (2:11), 1,600 (5:04) and 3,200 (11:52).

Varnado’s Devontay Vice was sixth in the 1,600.

Turner bested both hurdle events, the 110 (15.80) and 300 (41.60).

Eubanks won the shot put (42-5), with Varnado’s Raquan Handy (30-5.5) sixth.

CHS’ Payton Holmes captured the discus (132-5), with Salmen’s Aaron Craig winning the high jump (6-4).

Covington’s Brandon Blair topped the pole vault (11-0), and teammate Alex Hatcher won the javelin (166-7).

Covington’s Lamarro Jacobs bested the 100 (10.84), while CHS’ Jacquan Williams won the 200 (22.70).

Varnado’s Reggie Green was fourth in the 200 (23.70).

Covington’s Mitch Brumfield took the 400 (49.60), as Varnado teammates Antoine Torrence (58.0) and Cardez Jackson (1:04) ran fourth and sixth, respectively.

In the relays, Covington topped the 4×100 (43.78) and 4×400 (3:36), and Salmen won the 4×200 (1:30). Varnado was third in every relay, the 4×100 (47.46), 4×200 (1:41) and 4×400 (4:12).
