3 Mt. Hermon players named first team all-district players

The first-team all-district 7-1A girls’ basketball features mostly Mt. Hermon players.

Katilyn Barber was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Kiara Williams and Nicole Riley were both selected to the first team.

Mt. Hermon was the district runner-up to Southern Lab. The Lady Jackets made the playoffs as the No. 13 seed. They defeated Ouachita Christian in the bi-district round 48-44, but lost in the regional round to fourth seeded Central Catholic, 59-38. Central Catholic’s title run ended in the semifinals to eventual runner-up and top seeded West St. John.

Southern Lab coach Henry Combs was named the district’s Coach of the Year.

The rest of the first team included Southern Lab’s Doniesha Young and Myia Forbes.

Two Varnado players were named to the second team, Nylijah Cooper and Tarralyn Moses. Varnado struggled this season, going 8-18, and they missed the playoffs.

Kentwood had two second-team players, including Dekenia Nichols and Aliyah Cooper. Also, Southern Lab’s Jackie Bartley was a second-team player.

Mt. Hermon and Varnado both had one player earn honorable mention recognition. Dorthy Taylor was picked for Mt. Hermon, with Varnado’s Tikandra Lewis being selected.

Southern Lab’s Nicole Bartley, Jaynecia Smith and Shakiya Young are honorable mentions along with Kentwood’s Erica Cryer and Amber Holmes. Also making the honorable mentions were Archbishop Hannan’s Rachael LePere and Carley Eshleman.
