Franklinton and Pine win locally on first day of tournament

Franklinton’s eight-team tournament, which occurred Thursday, saw the host school, Pine, Hammond and Ponchatoula capture victories Thursday.

Thursday’s action took place at three sites, including FHS, Pine and Amite. The last two days were at FHS and Pine.

Franklinton reached the .500 mark at 5-5 by press time, with a 9-4 victory over Loranger at FHS Thursday.

Morgan Angelo singled twice and scored three runs, while Landon Magee recorded two hits. Josh Magee put up two singles and tallied a pair of runs. Tanner Jenkins doubled, hit a sacrifice fly and drove in two runs. Kevin Simmons, Brandon Thomas and Jared Varnado all singled.

Winning pitcher Simmons threw six innings, allowing four runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks.

Also locally, Pine erased a 5-0 and downed Varnado 26-7.

The Raiders (3-3) scored 10 runs in the second before adding 11 during the third and five more in the fourth, while taking advantage of 18 Varnado (2-6) errors.

Seth Brown led Pine’s 17-hit attack, going 4-5 with two doubles and five runs batted in. Brown was also the winning pitcher, throwing four relief innings and allowing two runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Nick Adcox finished with three hits, two for doubles and two RBIs. Jordan Phelps went 2-4 with a double, two RBIs and he scored four runs. Conner Ard and Devin Phillips both singled twice and drove in a run, while Trey Cooper singled and doubled. Hunter Cooper and Trevor Stuart doubled and logged two RBIs apiece. Jamie Adcox and Kaleb Voth finished with an RBI each.

Varnado’s Kyle Slocum and D.J. Jefferson both collected two hits with each doubling and driving in a run. Daylon Morris and Errol Varnado both recorded a hit and an RBI. Cameron Moses singled, while Ardale McGowuin and Jaylen Jefferson each drove in a run.

In other tournament action, Ponchatoula defeated Jewel Sumner 9-1 at Franklinton and Hammond blanked Amite in Amite.
