The young Varnado Kittens bested the even younger Archbishop Hannan Lady Hawks Friday night in Varnado, 63-34, to earn their first District 7-1A win of the season. The win evens the Kittens’ mark at 1-1 while overall they stand at 6-15. Hannan dropped to 6-13 overall while remaining winless at 0-3 in district action.

“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked to, but we still got the win,” said Lady Wildcats’ coach Lubertha Peters. “We missed too many layups, and both teams played sloppily.”

The Lady Wildcats led throughout the tilt, taking an 11-7 lead after the opening period and adding to its margin to close out the first half on top, 29-13. Tarralyn Moses led the way for Varnado with 22 game-topping points and 10 of those coming in the final period of action. Teammate Taylor Williams chipped in to the victory cause with 14 points while being the chairwoman of the boards, hauling down 10 in the contest.

Hannan, playing without a single senior on its roster and just one junior, was led by sophomore guard Rachael LePere, who bucketed 21 of the Lady Hawks’ 34 points. In the final quarter LePere scored 10 of her team’s dozen points.

Sophomore center Reilly Roberts came off the bench to top Hannan on the boards, snatching down seven.

In the third quarter Varnado maintained its advantage, outscoring Hannan 12-9 to close out the period ahead, 41-22. The final quarter brought more of the same as Varnado emptied its bench while outscoring the Lady Hawks 22-12 to earn the win.
