Ben’s Ford Christian School rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to defeat Sacred Heart 34-23 on Friday night in Hattiesburg, Miss.
It marked the third time the teams have met in the past two years with Ben’s Ford (1-0) winning all. The teams will meet once more later in the season.
“We have beat them three times but each time it has been pretty close games,” Ben’s Ford coach Tommy Pittman said. “They jumped on us early when we had trouble hanging on to the ball but we didn’t quit and battled back. We matchup real well and outplayed them the rest of the way.
“I think this will help us out going into next week when we start district play. It is really important for them to have success because the last few years have been pretty tough. Hopefully this year, we can pull out some of those close ball games and get some wins.”
Kaylin Stewart rushed for three touchdowns and 141 yards on 12 carries for Ben’s Ford. Aarron Taylor added 51 yards rushing and Cody Stewart had 36 on the ground to go with an interception return for a touchdown.
Destin Pittman was 5-of-10 for 65 yards and Cole Edwards rushed for a touchdown. Shelby Culpepper scored a two-point conversion and Will Owens connected on two point after touchdown kicks.
Kaylin Stewart’s first touchdown came from 11 yards to cut it to 13-6. He added a 39-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as Ben’s Ford cut it to 16-12 at halftime.
Edwards’ 3-yard run put the Eagles ahead for good and on the next offensive play, Cody Stewart returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown. Kaylin Stewart’s 25-yard run capped Ben’s Ford’s scoring.
