During a special called meeting on Wednesday, May 18, the Bogalusa City Council approved a redistricting plan for the city’s voters, after receiving updated population figures from the 2020 census.

The council decided from six possible plans, ultimately choosing “Plan E.” The vote to approve was 5-0 — city council member Kenny Kellis was absent and Gloria Kates was only able to listen to the meeting over the phone and could not cast a vote.

City council member Oneita Graham explained that only voters who are changing district will receive a notice from the Parish Registrar of Voters. If a citizen’s district is not changing, then he or she will not receive a special notice.

The detailed description of the districts can be found at the end of this article.

In other business, the council also approved an ordinance authorizing Mayor Wendy Perrette to enter into a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with the State of Louisiana, Division of Administration, relative to the Water Sector Program. This vote was also 5-0.

Perrette explained that this grant program will enable the city to put up $1 million in CARES Act (COVID-19 relief) funds, and receive back $3.8 million, for a total project value of $4.8 million. The money will be used to improve the city’s sewage and water systems.

“There’s been no sewage improvements since I was born,” she said.

The next meeting of the Bogalusa City Council will be held Tuesday, June 7, at 5:30 p.m.
