Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Two significant holidays, Christmas and New Year’s Day, are rapidly approaching. As we enter this holiday season, we are reminded of the many blessings we have as residents of these United States.

The most significant holiday experience is our celebration of the Christmas season. This is a time not only for giving and receiving gifts, but also for deep reflection on the meaning of Christmas as it pertains to us as individuals and to our families and our nation.

Christmas is a time of gifts under the tree, lights in the windows, cards in the mail, stockings hanging in the family room, dinners with family and friends, and greetings of “Merry Christmas” to those whom we see in our daily lives. Such things bring joy to many. Another great source of joy is the privilege and ability to give to those whose life circumstances mean not being able to afford presents under the tree or a sumptuous Christmas meal. We can also give by reaching out to those who will not see loved ones because they are unable to travel home for Christmas.

There are many opportunities for giving beyond gifts to family and friends. Giving opportunities in Washington Parish are available through our churches, local food banks and other organizations designed to assist those who are less fortunate. Additionally, there are numerous regional and national organizations that are dedicated to providing help to those in need.

During this Christmas season, I encourage all to reach out to others through giving, whether the giving is through gifts, through service to others, or simply through an encouraging word. Those who give always receive a blessing.

Coming quickly after Christmas is our celebration of the New Year. This is a time for parties and fellowship with acquaintances and I encourage all to practice safety and responsibility. Please remember not to drink and drive and to be very cautious with fireworks or firearms.

During both of these holiday seasons, our officers will be on duty and working to protect the citizens of our parish. If you need us during the holidays, call 985-839-3434.

I wish for each of you a very blessed Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!
