Varnado’s season came to an end last Friday night in Logansport with a 40-18 loss against the defending Class 1A champion, who has now won 27 straight games.

The game was essentially decided by three drives that totaled eight plays, three touchdowns and 19 points over a 3-minute, 40-second time period.

The Wildcats got off to a tough start, as Logansport scored the game’s first 14 points.

Varnado came back with 12 straight to make it 14-12 with 9:01 left in the first half.

But Logansport began a drive with 3:17 left in the first half at its 8 and scored in three plays. The big play was a 73-yard pass that had a facemask penalty on Varnado at the end. A 9-yard scoring run ended the drive.

The Wildcats punted on the next possession and Logansport took over with a minute left. They scored on a quick pass that ended in a 52-yard touchdown with four seconds left.

The loss does not diminish a solid season for the Wildcats. They finished with an 8-4 record and a second-straight trip to the quarterfinals, and they have won at least one playoff game in each of the last four years.

Congratulations to head coach Scott Shaffett and everybody involved with Varnado football on another successful season.
