Vernell Burkhalter

Vernell Lowe Burkhalter, 75, a resident of Franklinton, died Saturday evening, July 15, 2017, at her home.

She was a member of Sweet Rest Missionary Baptist Church and various organizations, such as The Ideal Women’s Club. Vernell was a proud employee of Franklinton Head Start; she retired after 35 years of service. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling and going out to eat. Vernell was a woman of tremendous faith, love and strength.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Danequia “Nikki” Burkhalter of Franklinton, James “Jamie” Burkhalter of Ponchatoula and Jermaine Roshon Burkhalter of Washington, D.C.; five great-grandchildren, Niaja Burkhalter, Dajour “China” Burkhalter, Christian Burkhalter, Termarius Burkhalter and Jorrian Burkhalter; and also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, James “Jimmy” Burkhalter; daughter, Eulinda Reneé Burkhalter; parents, Adam Lowe and Mamie Williams Lowe; brothers, Will Lowe and Z.B. Lowe; and sisters, Ozzie Mae Coston, Mae Ella Connely, Vera Lee Tate, Bernice Harvey, Octavia Lowe and Hearlie Mae Hewitt.

Visitation will be at Crain and Sons Funeral Home on Thursday, July 20, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. with a family hour from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Visitation will continue Friday, July 21, at Sweet Rest Missionary Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held in the church at 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Mallery Callahan Sr., pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Church of Christ Holiness Cemetery.
