Football season comes to an end in parish

Varnado’s football season came to an end last Friday night with a 50-14 loss to second-seeded Logansport in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1A postseason.

The final game of the season is always the toughest day of the year unless you win the championship.

Despite the setback, the Wildcats and their fans have plenty to be proud of when they look back to the 2016 season.

The team captured the District 8-1A title. They entered the game on a six-game winning streak. Logansport was the first team in five games to eclipse the 20-point mark against Varnado.

In the end, the Wildcats lost to a very good team, as Logansport is 12-0.

The loss by Varnado means the end of the 2016 high school football season for Washington Parish teams.

There were plenty of great games this season we had a chance to cover.

Something that doesn’t get mentioned enough is how appreciative and thankful we are for the coaches and everybody else who helps us out.

Throughout every football season, coaches take time to work with the paper on anything we ask of them. They help us with the preseason football section, such as distributing rosters, schedules and letting us know when picture day takes place. They give us input for weekly previews. They help us work with our Friday night deadline after games with an interview right after the contest, even though it could be after a great win, a tough loss or something in between. They send us scores from their games that we did not attend and then give us details on the game the following Monday.

We’ve had others send us photos from recent games that go great with the articles.

Football is just one example in sports of the tremendous response we get when it comes to sports. This kind of response happens in all sports and is the reason we are able to get the number of game stories that appear in the paper.

Obviously, we can’t be at every game or every meet, but we also understand that fans want to be able to keep up with their team and everybody deserves credit for their accomplishments whether it’s a team or an individual achievement.

As we continue with the winter sports, and later, the spring sports, we wish all of the teams good luck in their seasons.
