Varnado picked up great win last week

Last Friday, the Varnado Wildcats had a game at Nichols State University against Covenant Christian Academy.

The Wildcats entered their District 8-1A opener with a 2-3 record and were facing a team in Covenant Christian that 5-1. The one was against Class 4A Vandebilt Catholic, which is currently 6-1.

Varnado was going against a team it lost to in heartbreaking fashion the year before. When trailing 20-14, CCA went for it on fourth down from its own 43 with less than a minute left.

The ball carrier broke two tackles in the backfield and went 57 yards to essentially seal that game.

Covenant Christian went on to win the league title.

Fast forward to Friday, it was completely different story.

Behind two touchdowns runs each by Jacorious Bickham and Jadarrell Magee, another by Desmond Harry, two touchdown passes by James Williams and a pair of touchdown receptions from Armontee Kemp and a solid defense that allowed just six points in the second half, Varnado captured a 52-20 victory.

It was definitely a big win for the Wildcats, as Covenant Christian was fourth in Division IV coming into that game.

Tonight, the Wildcats play their final road game of the 2016 regular season, as they face Ridgewood at Jefferson Playground.

The task at hand is simple. Win these next three games and they’re outright District 8-1A champs.

Good luck to the Wildcats.
