Upcoming events will help our community

We were pleased to report this week about the myriad fundraisers in our community.

First, this Saturday the Bogalusa police are hosting their annual free softball tournament at the Avenue B ball fields. If you get a chance, it’ll be worth a visit not only to support the men and women who keep us safe, but also for a chance to win some nice prizes.

As always, the police department will be selling T-shirts for $15, and all proceeds will go toward the medical bills of a law enforcement officer who is battling cancer.

In addition to the softball tournament, city councilman Teddy Drummond and councilwoman Tamira Smith are selling $2 raffle tickets to benefit Cassidy Park. The city is still waiting on FEMA funding, but in the meantime city employees are already filling holes and patching up the park as best they can. However, it’s clear the park will require quite a bit of funding to fix up the play area, the road and other park amenities.

Federal dollars — if and when they come — will be appreciated. And we appreciate the attention our state’s leaders are giving the park. However, we have an opportunity to help ourselves now and we should seize that opportunity. We urge everyone to buy a ticket (or two).

We still don’t know when the park will be re-opened to the public. However, when that day comes, we will be able to take even more pride in the park knowing we all pitched in to save it.
