Board needs to address VHS band vacancy

Extracurricular activities are an integral part of the high school experience.
Not everybody is athletic enough to play team sports like football, basketball, baseball or soccer, so there must be some kind of activity for those students to feel as though they are actually part of the school. School pride is what it’s all about.

Varnado High School students simply want a band director. Varnado currently has no band this year after previous band director James Griffin resigned after 17 years on the job.

Varnado High School parents and supporters addressed the Washington Parish School Board on Thursday evening, imploring board members to do everything in their power to help VHS bring in a qualified band director.

Friday night football is not quite the same without the band playing music and marching before the games and at halftime.

School board members said all the right things to the group about securing a band director for the school. The group seemed satisfied from what they heard at the meeting.

The school board needs to tackle this issue as quickly as possible as it is already the second week of the season for Louisiana High School Athletic Association schools. Varnado students want and deserve someone to be their band director. And quickly.
