We Salute

Each Friday, The Daily News will recognize individuals and businesses in Washington Parish who have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.

We believe that an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things … who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference … are recognized and saluted.

Because this is a salute to members of the community of Washington Parish, we solicit your recommendations for groups or individuals to be considered for inclusion.

This week we salute:

• William “Bill” Nielsen Jr., 2011 Citizen of the Year for Bogalusa, who was honored during a reception held last Wednesday at Bogalusa Country Club.

• Billy Hartfield, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, who was recently awarded the firm’s Spirit of Partnership Award for outstanding performance during 2011.

• Franklinton High School graduate Kalib Travis, who recently signed a football scholarship to Tyler Junior College.

• Hazel Bagent, Bettye Dyson and Janez Johnston, Washington Parish Adult Education staff members who received awards during the 37th annual Louisiana Association for Public, Community and Adult Education Conference held June 3-6 in Marksville.

• Lesley McKinley, who has been appointed Bogalusa High School principal.

• Janene Hollen, who has been appointed Franklinton Elementary School principal.

• American Legion Post 24’s 2012-13 officers, who were installed last Saturday.

• Center Lodge No. 244 F&AM, which presented a check for $1,000 to Col. Bobby Miller, USMC ret., for the Bogalusa Venturer Crew 313 canoe racing team.
