On April 2, Bogalusa Mayor Tyrin Truong officially announced his candidacy for the position of Chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party. Truong is the youngest Mayor in Louisiana at just 24, and assumed office in January of Last year after beating out incumbent Wendy Perette with 56% of the vote.

In a letter to the Louisiana Democratic Party State Central Committee, Truong outlined his beliefs and values as a politician. He expressed a desire for a new generation of leadership in the Democratic Party, and to bring in fresh perspectives and ideas while working with the past leaders.

Truong cited the biggest threat to Louisianians as far-right extremists and draconian policies that they stand for. He said in the letter, “Louisiana only thrives when Democrats win.”

The mayor went on to list his accomplishments during his first year in office, citing a reduction of the murder rate by half and an increase in spending on parks and public works. He recently proposed a contentious 2024 operating budget for the city which will be put to a vote on April 16, but will face a litany of required amendments once audits from the previous administration are complete.

The incumbent Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party, Katie Bernhardt, assumed office in September of 2020 and will be seeking re-election. There are a host of other candidates for the position from around the state, and voting is taking place this month.
