FRANKLINTON — A Washington Parish grand jury has returned indictments against two individuals in connection with the first-degree murder of Ranshad Jefferson, according to Interim District Attorney J. Collin Sims.
The defendants, identified as Journell Nelson, 20, of Bogalusa, and Gwendalyn Speights, 24, also of Bogalusa, were indicted on February 6, 2024. Nelson faces additional charges related to the illegal use of a firearm, as stated by Sims.
The incident, which resulted in Jefferson’s death on December 8, 2023, prompted Assistant District Attorney Ronnie Gracianette to present the case before the grand jury.
Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances surrounding Jefferson’s death or the nature of the evidence presented to the grand jury.
Nelson and Speights are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
