Liberty High School Triumphs in Hannan High School Basketball Tournament

HANNAN, La. — In a showcase of young basketball talent, Liberty High School clinched the championship title in a closely contested game against Mandeville, winning 56-51 at the Hannan High School tournament, which concluded on Dec. 23.

Liberty’s Whitney Hart was instrumental in her team’s victory, scoring 21 points in the final game and being named the Most Outstanding Player. Alongside Hart, Kaysharia Woods and Quiana Lavergne from Liberty shared a spot on the All-Tournament Team, highlighting their significant contributions.

Representing Mandeville on the All-Tournament Team was Alanna Benoit, whose consistent high-scoring games, including 16 points in the semi-final, were pivotal for her team’s runner-up finish.

Northshore took third place in the tournament, with Cherie Spencer’s impressive performance earning her a place on the All-Tournament Team. Dominican won the consolation bracket, with Kalie Tu representing them on the All-Tournament Team, thanks to her standout play.

The tournament started with an exciting start as Pine defeated Loranger 44-33. A. Phelps led Pine with 14 points, while Loranger’s top scorer was Cameron Covert with 10 points. This game set the stage for the intense competition that followed.

Mandeville displayed their dominance early with a resounding 78-20 victory over Kenner Discovery. Mandeville’s Hannah Benoit led the scoring with an impressive 21 points, while C. Alexander was the top scorer for Kenner Discovery with 11 points.

In another closely fought battle, Chapelle edged out Hammond 29-25. Kaylee Dublin and Madison Vaught were key players for Chapelle, scoring 9 and 7 points, respectively, while Jones led Hammond with 10 points.

Host team Hannan demonstrated strength with a commanding 55-19 win over Bogalusa. McKenna Sinon’s 21-point game for Hannan was a highlight, alongside Maren Baham’s 10 points.

On the second tournament day, Liberty defeated Lakeshore 60-16 in the second round. Whitney Hart’s 32 points were a tournament highlight, showcasing her skills that eventually earned her the Most Outstanding Player title.

Mandeville continued their strong performance in the semi-finals, overpowering Chapelle 54-27. Alanna Benoit’s 16 points were instrumental in securing their place in the final.

In addition to the main matches, several other games were notable for their competitive spirit and individual performances. Northshore’s win over Chapelle for third place, Dominican’s victory in the consolation round, and the impressive showings in other bracket games all contributed to the tournament’s excitement.

As the tournament concluded, the performances of players like Hart, Benoit, Sinon, and others provided thrilling basketball action and highlighted the depth of talent in regional high school basketball. The event showcased athletic prowess and fostered a spirit of sportsmanship and community among the participating teams.
