Fatal Bogalusa Shooting Update

BOGALUSA, LA – The Bogalusa Police Department reported a fatal shooting in Poplas Quarters on Friday, December 8, 2023. Ranshad Jefferson, a 28-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene after officers found him with multiple gunshot wounds near Ann and Convenience Streets.

Responding to reports of gunfire around 10:00 a.m., officers and Northshore EMS personnel discovered Jefferson unresponsive in the 1100 Block of Ann Street. Despite immediate attention, Jefferson showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the location.

In the ensuing investigation, police identified and apprehended 20-year-old Journell Nelson, suspected of the homicide, following a brief foot chase through a nearby alleyway. Nelson, found in possession of a handgun, faces charges including Second Degree Murder, Attempted Second Degree Murder, Illegal Use of Weapons, Illegal Carrying of Weapons, and Resisting an Officer.

Additionally, Gwendalyn Speights was arrested in connection to the crime. Speights is charged with Principal to Second Degree Murder and Principal to Attempted Second Degree Murder.
