BOGALUSA, La. – Our Lady of the Angels Hospital has received an A from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that evaluates healthcare providers. The hospital’s commitment to patient-centered care, critical care and maternity care are some of the things that contributed to this recognition.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for Our Lady of the Angels Hospital, as it is the first time the institution has received such a high rating. It reflects the hospital’s dedication to providing exceptional healthcare services.

One of the many areas where the hospital excels is inpatient billing ethics and informed consent. Detailed billing information is provided easily to patients, and the hospital ensures access to representatives to address any billing concerns. Additionally, staff members undergo training to ensure patients fully comprehend the risks and alternatives before undergoing any tests, treatments, or procedures. This commitment to patient safety and transparency is a core priority for all doctors at the hospital.

Dr. Brian Galofaro, the Chief Medical Officer of Our Lady of the Angels Hospital, expressed the hospital’s focus on rural medicine and emphasized its team-based approach, with multiple doctors reviewing each case.

The hospital also places importance on maintaining appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios. Their nurse staffing plans ensure a sufficient number of nurses are available for direct care in medical and surgical units. Furthermore, the hospital has implemented policies and procedures to prevent healthcare-associated infections, resulting in low rates of C. difficile infections, blood infections, urinary tract infections, and MRSA infections.

To maintain high standards and reduce the risk of cross-contamination, Our Lady of the Angels Hospital has implemented handwashing tracking software to promote proper hand hygiene among staff.

In the realm of maternity care, the hospital has made efforts to decrease the rate of cesarean sections. Their focus on evidence-based practices ensures mothers and babies receive the highest quality care. This dedication to promoting natural childbirth when appropriate sets the hospital apart and helps ensure positive outcomes.

Critical care services have also been intensified at Our Lady of the Angels Hospital. With specialists available 24/7, on-site or via telemedicine, patients in critical condition receive immediate attention from specially trained doctors. This availability contributes to the hospital’s commitment to providing the best possible outcomes for all patients, according to Ralph Serpas III, the Chief Operating Officer at Our Lady of the Angels Hospital.

Paolo Zambito, the Northshore Market President for the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, expressed pride in Our Lady of the Angels Hospital’s achievements and unwavering commitment to excellence. He emphasized the hospital’s continuous efforts to improve and meet the needs of its patients.
