Janet Spratte Tuthill, a resident of Baton Rouge, LA passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at 103 years of age. She was born on April 14, 1920, in Brentwood, MO to George and Jewel Pate Spratte. Janet graduated from Brentwood High School in 1938, where she was active in singing,
dancing, acting and the Debate Club. She attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO before transferring to Washington University of St. Louis, MO where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942.
Before moving to Baton Rouge in 2005, she and her husband resided in Bogalusa, LA for many years, where she was an active member of ESM United Methodist Church, Chancel Choir, Ingleside Symposium Literary Society, the Northeast Garden Club, Civic League.
After moving to Baton Rouge, she joined the Broadmoor United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed being a member of the Saints Alive Choir, Seeker Sunday School Class, United Methodist Woman’s Club, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute classes.
Janet is survived by her daughter, Nancy Tuthill Bernard, and her husband Ron Bernard M.D. of Waynesville, NC; her granddaughters, Karen Nichols and her husband Tim Nichols of Baton Rouge, LA and Shelley Holmes of New Orleans, LA; and a grandson, Barret Bernard and wife Danielle of New Orleans, LA. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Allison, Clark, and Rachel Nichols, as well as Evan and Grayson Bernard.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Sanford W. Tuthill, M.D.; her parents, George and Jewel Spratte; and a sister, Georgianna Spratte Dubin.
Entombment will be held in the Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum in Bogalusa, LA with a service for immediate family. A celebration of life service will be held at Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, LA on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, from 1:00 P.M. until time for the service at 2:00 P.M. with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, Janet’s family request that memorials may be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge, ESM United Methodist Church of Bogalusa, or any other charity of one’s choice.
The family wishes to thank all of the friends and neighbors who were such wonderful support to Janet in her last years, as well as Cardinal Health Hospice for their compassion during the past three weeks.
