At a ceremony held Friday, June 23, these six highly trained doctors graduated from the rigorous, three-year LSU Rural Family Medicine Residency Program. They will now serve as family medicine doctors in rural communities across the state of Louisiana.

Our Lady of the Angels Hospital operates and fully funds this institutionally sponsored training program accredited through LSU School of Medicine – New Orleans. The Bogalusa LSU Rural Family Medicine Residency Program is the only rurally located program of its kind in the state of Louisiana, and one of only 55 in the nation.

The program’s mission is to train competent and dedicated family physicians to serve in rural and often under-served populations and to establish a premier health-care center for Southeast Louisiana.

The program is the only Louisiana residency among the first 200 new Medicare-funded residency slots to hospitals serving underserved communities. This new residency slot increases the resident class size from 6 to 7 per year.

Since 2014, Our Lady of the Angels has recruited and retained 5 graduates from its LSU Rural Family Medicine Residency Program to serve within its healthcare ministry.
