Severe Weather and Dangerous Heat Update- June 15

WHAT:  MARGINAL to SLIGHT RISK of severe weather and Heat Advisory in effect.

WHEN: Heat Advisory: 11 AM – 7 PM today. Severe weather: later this afternoon/evening and a potential second round later tonight into Friday morning.

WHERE: Heat Advisory: All of SE LA and SE MS. Severe weather: Mainly central and northern areas.

CONFIDENCE:

  • Low confidence on the potential for strong to severe storms with round 1 across eastern areas (coastal MS) this afternoon/evening.
  • Low to medium confidence with the potential for a complex of strong to severe storms to swing through mainly central and northern areas after midnight tonight and into early Friday.
  • High confidence with the potential for dangerous heat indices later today.

Impacts:

The main threats associated with any severe storms today and early tomorrow will be:

Damaging Winds:

  • Wind gusts greater than 50 mph will be possible, which may lead to damage to trees and powerlines.

Large Hail:

  • Large hail 1 inch or greater in diameter will be possible

  • Wind-blown hail could cause additional damage

Heavy Rain:

  • Storms today will be capable of heavy rainfall with rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour

Heat:

  • Heat Index values between 105-110 during the afternoon/early evening could cause health issues
