Recently Civic League donated a Gem Magnolia tree and day lilies to Nellie Byers Training Center in Bogalusa. Marsha Hunt, a new Civic League member, is the daughter of Joseph Walker Hunt, who along with B. B. Sixty Rayborn and Marshall Holloway, was instrumental in building the first Nellie Byers school in Lee’s Creek circa 1960. In 1946, Nellie Byers, recently widowed, began teaching special needs children in one classroom in Northside Elementary School. From that one room, to the school built by Mr. Hunt, and eventually to its present location, Nellie Byers Training Center has continued to provide services for the developmentally challenged of Eastern Washington Parish. Civic League is honored to contribute in some small way to Nellie Byers Training Center.
