WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) announced the U.S. Department of Energy will award a total of $24,570,784.00 from his Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) for CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure projects in Louisiana. Magnolia Sequestration Hub, LLC will receive $21,570,784.00 for a project that will result in an estimated 300 million metric tons of total CO2 storage capacity in Allen Parish. Howard Midstream Energy Partners LLC will receive $3,000,000.00 to conduct a study for a system capable of moving up to 250 million metric tons of CO2 per year from multiple sources to multiple storage locations on the Gulf Coast.

“Louisiana can pave the way for low-emission manufacturing and carbon capture projects,” said Dr. Cassidy. “The infrastructure law continues to support projects in our state that create jobs and new economic opportunities.”

Today’s announcement is one of a string of announcements highlighting the achievements of IIJA and Cassidy’s continued push to ensure the state is positioned to remain at the forefront of the energy and manufacturing sector globally.  

Background 

Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that they intend to grant Louisiana the authority to permit, site, and provide oversight of carbon storage wells in the state. Cassidy has led a two-year push for the EPA to allow Louisiana to invest in carbon storage wells, meeting resistance from the Biden administration. The positions Louisiana to better access funding dedicated to carbon capture in Cassidy’s IIJA as today’s announcements exhibit. 

He also announced the U.S. Department of Energy selected two Louisiana projects for carbon capture demonstration awards in Lake Charles and Hahnville.
