Dear Editor:

Recently, I was doing some volunteer work for Friends of the Library recording the donations received. I was pleasantly surprised to see there were about 250 contributions this year. Membership dues range from $10 for individuals to $500 for Corporate Sponsors. Many individuals chose to give very generous amounts.

This demonstrated the pride and esteem our citizens have for our library system. A portion of our taxes support the library but Washington Parish per capita is less than half the national average. Having those extra donations to Friends of the Library is what makes it possible for our libraries to give such excellent service.

The Friends of the Library is there to fill a need … the library says “we need…” and we write the check. Talk about a good feeling! We are thrilled that so many of our citizens make this possible. Libraries are not just about books. They provide the pathway, the means, to reaching our goals in life.

If anyone wishes to join Friends of the Library, there are applications available at each of our libraries. If you need one mailed to you call your local branch and give them your mailing address.
