Back to School activity

Pastor Christopher Matthews and the Bethlehem Baptist Church invite the community youth to its sixth annual “Ready-Set Back 2 School Summer Fest.” The event is given to assist the youth, pre-K through 12th grade, with free school supplies for the coming 2022-23 school session. The fun activity is scheduled for Wednesday, July 27, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Church Family Life Center. All pre-registered youth will have backpacks tagged to avoid a line to receive their supplies. Youth are asked to pre-register to ensure safety and adequate supplies, or they may choose to register on-site. There will be empowering speakers, music with DJ AP from Leesville, and a variety of brochures. The youth will be able to cool with Cool Stop snow cones, water slide fun with permission-signed waivers and sprinklers. The youth will have an opportunity to have pictures made at the photo corner. An evening meal of chili dogs, chips, and drinks will be served to all. Each youth member will have an opportunity to receive gift cards and certificates throughout the activities.

Paraprofessional assessment

The Washington Parish School System will be administering the ParaPro Assessment on Thursday, July 28, at 8 a.m. at Franklinton Jr. High School. A registration fee of $55 must be paid in the form of a cashier’s check or money order no later than noon on Tuesday, July 26, at the WPSS Office of Student Support Services. Call 985-839-9816 for more details. The ParaPro Assessment is a general aptitude test that is required for paraprofessional certification. It also offers school districts an objective assessment of a candidate’s foundation of knowledge and skills.

Parish fair poster contest

The Washington Parish Fair Association invites Washington Parish artists to participate in the 2022 Fair Poster Contest. The entry deadline is Friday, July 29. Rules for poster entry are as follows: Entrants must be Washington Parish residents (or native college students) and at least 18 years old. The design should be 16 by 20 inches and not exceed 18 by 24 inches (portrait/vertical) on mat board, illustration board, canvas or heavy paper. Format is up to the artist. The poster design may contain “Washington Parish Fair 2022,” or the printer can add appropriate lettering digitally. Include a small sketch to indicate letter design and placement. The design may pertain to the Fair in general or to a specific part of the Fair. It must be non-commercial (not used for any other purposes such as T-shirts, cups, etc.). If an identifiable person is used, a letter of release to all publication rights and royalties must accompany the design. The theme for this year’s fair is “All Roads Lead to the Fair.” The poster can follow the theme and include the theme name but is not required. Individuals may enter more than one design. Previous entries may be considered. Each entrant must sign a release of rights and royalties of publication. Entries will be released back to the artist after the 2022 Fair concludes. The poster will not be included in the 2022 fair catalog. Poster designs can be entered from now until Friday, July 29, at Hancock Whitney in Franklinton or Bogalusa during regular business hours. Back to School fun day

Greater Bogalusa Community Center and Better Bogalusa will present a “Back to School Fun Day and Supply Drive” on Saturday, July 30, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Avenue B Ball Park, located at 900 Ave. B in Bogalusa.

Baby Let’s Cruise

The Bogalusa Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission will present “Baby Let’s Cruise” on Friday, Aug. 5. Cruise town like you’re a teenager again. Bring your teens along. Stop by the old fountain for food, karaoke and open mic fun. Dress your decade. Stop for some selfies. Don’t forget your Sonic cup.

Candidates forum

The Community Action Organization will host a mayoral candidates’ forum and debate on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at the Love Outreach Family Worship Church, located at 437 S. Columbia St. in Bogalusa.

Clean up day and movie night

The Franklinton Chamber of Commerce, along with the Town of Franklinton and Amwaste Management, is excited to present the first annual “Team Up to Clean Up Day and Movie Night,” which will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., ending with the movie night at 6:45 p.m. All adults, children of all ages, families, businesses, organizations and churches are invited to form teams of two or more in efforts to rid the town of litter. To sign up, contact Penny Jones, Community Pride committee chair, at 334-301-4969. Sign up and receive a “Team Up to Clean Up” T-shirt. The T-shirt and coloring sheet will grant you access to the movie (Monsters, Inc.). Bring your chair, blanket and a picnic dinner to enjoy the movie, which will be shown behind the Washington Parish School Board, across the street from Franklinton Jr. High School (800 Main St.). Open Road Cruisers

The Open Road Cruisers monthly “Cruise-In” will be held the second Thursday night of each month, from March through August, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the parking lot of Zesto’s Drive-In, located at 100 Richmond St. in Bogalusa.
