Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship

The Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship Award was started to honor the life and legacy of the late McClurie Sampson of Bogalusa, the late David Riggins of Vinton, and all past presidents and members of the Louisiana Municipal Black Caucus Association. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist first- and second-year undergraduate students across the state defray some of the cost of tuition for college and/or community college. Scholarship awardees are also asked to participate in public engagement events with local leaders. All applications must be electronically submitted to by midnight on or before July 25. Requirements are as follows: Eligible applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50. Applicants must be a first- or second-year undergraduate student in good standing. If an applicant is a first-year student, a letter of acceptance must be attached to the application from the school of his or her choice. The institution of higher learning must be in Louisiana. Applicants must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words on a current event topic within their respective community, and further express in writing what steps they will take to improve their community upon completion of college. All applications must list the name of the LMBC-LEO Mayor or Council member that recommended them. Member/municipalities must be in good standing with LMBC-LEO, and only one submission is allowed per municipality/organization. Each submission subject line should read “2022-23 Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship” and also include the applicant’s name, address, phone number, email address, and a copy of the institution of higher learning’s acceptance letter.

Memorial Day observance

A Memorial Day observance will be on the street beside the Varnado Store Museum on Sunday, May 29, at 2 p.m. The program will be presented by the American Legion Post 24. Everybody is invited.

Memorial Day closures

Washington Parish government offices and the Choctaw Road Landfill will be closed Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day ceremony

“A Tribute to Our Veterans,” a Memorial Day ceremony hosted by the RPEC, will be held Monday, May 30, at 9 a.m. at the Our Veterans Memorial Park site located at 54042 Dollar Road. The speaker will be State Sen. Beth Mizell, and the American Legion will perform the Rifle Salute.

Crime Prevention Commission chair needed

According to Bogalusa City Code section 2-132, the chairman of the Crime Prevention Commission shall be appointed by the Bogalusa City Council. Parent and Family Engagement Survey

The Louisiana Department of Education has released the Parent and Family Engagement Survey. Washington Parish Schools values the input of its families. Complete the survey to help the district better serve its families and students. Each parent or guardian is encouraged to complete the survey before it closes on Tuesday, May 31. Gerald family reunion

The 2022 Gerald Family Reunion has been set for Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. It will be held at the Pine Masonic Lodge. Please bring a covered dish and old family photos to share.

YouthBuild Bogalusa

YouthBuild Bogalusa (YBB) is enrolling students for its program. To gain entry in the program, a student will need to be between the ages of 16-24, and have not graduated from high school or earned his or her HISET. The new applicant will take the TABE placement test, in order to gain entry in the program. There will be testing for placement, Monday through Thursday every week from 9 a.m. until noon. YBB provides monetary incentives to learn — up to $500 every two weeks. YBB also has a full-time Case Manager and Counselor.
