YouthBuild Bogalusa

YouthBuild Bogalusa (YBB) is enrolling students for its program. To gain entry in the program, a student will need to be between the ages of 16-24, and have not graduated from high school or earned his or her HISET. The new applicant will take the TABE placement test, in order to gain entry in the program. There will be testing for placement, Monday through Thursday every week from 9 a.m. until noon. YBB offers opportunities in educational aid in passing the HISET, Carpentry Skills (NCCER Certification/OSHA 30), mentoring, AmeriCorps (educational stipend/award), CNA, and welding, along with life skills (community involvement/leadership skills). YBB provides monetary incentives to learn — up to $500 every two weeks. YBB also has a full-time Case Manager and Counselor on staff. Career opportunity fair

Keasha Hodges, Job Developer at YouthBuild Bogalusa (YBB), is excited to announce a Career Educational Opportunity Fair on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 9:30 a.m. at the YBB building at 1242 Austin St. in Bogalusa. YBB has invited and will host the Bogalusa Fire Department, Bogalusa Police Department, Geaux Jobs and several others. For more information, call 985-545-1627.

Washington Parish Republican Women

The Washington Parish Republican Women will meet Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Maria’s Restaurant on Austin Street at 11:30 a.m. The business meeting will begin at noon. Marshall “Buddy” Jenkins and Parish Councilman Joe Culpepper will present and discuss the proposed redistricting of the parish. Social distancing will continue.

Varnado Store Museum quilt seminar

The D.A. Varnado Store Museum’s annual quilt seminar will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the museum annex. The museum and annex will be opened at 9:30 a.m. to sign in and view the quilt exhibit. Quilting demonstrations will begin at 10 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. The seminar cost will be $10 for members and $12 for non-members. Pre-registration is preferred. Blood drive

There will be a blood drive held Sunday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Southern Sass Dance Company, located at 226 Memphis St. in Bogalusa. This drive will support Sydney Schuler, 4, of Bogalusa, who was diagnosed with leukemia on Jan. 19. She needs regular blood transfusions as part of her treatments. This blood drive is being held through Ochsner Blood Bank.

COVID self-test kit distribution locations

iHealth over-the-counter self-administered COVID-19 test kits can be picked up at the following listed operations. Test kits are on a first-come, first-serve basis and can only be picked up during days and times listed. The locations are: City Drug Store, 330 Austin St. in Bogalusa, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.; Sumrall’s Pharmacy, 30304 Louisiana Highway 21 in Angie, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Rawls Pharmacy, 36009 Louisiana Highway 38 in Mt. Hermon, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Rocky’s Med Shoppe, 133 Cumberland St. in Bogalusa, Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; Forshag’s Pharmacy, 1919 Main St. in Franklinton, Wednesdays from 8 a.m. until noon; Williams Pharmacy, 1058 Tanglewood Drive in Franklinton, Tuesdays from 8 a.m. until noon; and C&F Health Mart, 424 Austin St. in Bogalusa, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

To help lessen the burden at hospitals and clinics, Washington Parish citizens may also schedule a COVID-19 test at the following locations: Washington Parish Health Unit, 626 Carolina Ave. in Bogalusa, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., appointment is recommended (drive-up only), call 985-732-6615; Washington Parish Health Unit, 120 11th Ave. in Franklinton, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., appointment is recommended (drive-up only), call 985-839-5646, ext. 1; and Walgreens, 217 Superior Ave. in Bogalusa, by appointment only and drive-thru only, visit online at www.walgreens.com/covid19testing or call 985-735-6434. Please note that most locations are experiencing a higher than normal request, and therefore the rapid test may not be available. Additional locations can be found online at ldh.la.gov/page/3934 and then click on the specific parish.
